The amount of SPAM email working its way through the internet is forever increasing and at an alarming rate. I am sure that you would be wasting a lot of time just clearing out problem emails every day or so and think that there must be a better way.
Of course the most important tool is your anti-virus software, and a good suite of tools like AVG anti-virus and firewall will help you to not only combat virus emails but also automatically segregate SPAM and unwanted emails following a set of rules.
Your hosting account comes with a user configurable component called SPAM ASSASIN, this software ranks incoming emails with a SPAM score based on a range of protocols and you can set a score limit that will automatically delete any message that is above your base score.
These two options combined should give you a decent start to preventing and clearing up SPAM however we have introduced a new step in our fight against the SPAM; Greylisting.
You may be wondering what Greylisting is and that’s a very important thing to understand:
- Each email that comes in from a new sender is automatically rejected, if it's from a legitimate sender and not a SPAM bot then the email sending automatically resends the message and our server will then accept it. SPAM bots cannot handle rejected messages and will usually stop sending to the email address.
- The Grey List description is "Greylisting defends email users against spam. When enabled, the mail server will temporarily reject any email from a sender the server does not recognize. If the email is legitimate, the originating server will try again after a delay. After sufficient time has elapsed, the server will accept the email."
This tool will allow us to reject even more SPAM than we currently do however it is important to note that any messages that are incoming from new senders won’t be delivered immediately, there will be a short delay of approximately 5 minutes for the server time out to allow the sender through.
If you have any questions regarding the new Greylisting tool please let us know.
